Calamosche Beach, Vendicari

Calamosche is one of those beaches that remind you why people come back to Sicily every summer. A small sandy bay tucked between two rocky headlands, inside the Vendicari nature reserve, 19 km from Marzamemi. In 2005 Legambiente named it the most beautiful beach in Italy, and once you reach the end of the path, you'll see why.

How to get there

The Calamosche entrance to the reserve is on the SP19 provincial road, between Noto and Pachino. The last stretch to the car park is a dirt road full of potholes, so take it slowly. Once you've parked, pay the reserve entrance fee (€3.50 per person) and carry on on foot for about twenty minutes.

A day at Calamosche

There are no beach clubs or bars here: you come for the sea, not the facilities. Bring water, something to eat and a beach umbrella. If you forget lunch, there's a restaurant near the car park where you can grab a sandwich. The sand is fine and the water stays shallow a long way out, perfect for children too: the only effort for them is the 20-minute walk, with bags and umbrella.

Our tip

In high summer, get there early in the morning: the bay is small and fills up fast.
